May 1, 2024 twelve Cedar Valley Unitarian Universalist community members attended a rally in Waterloo to support refugees in the wake of Iowa's new bill which takes effect July 1, giving local/state law enforcement the power of the federal government to deport those immigrants they believe to be here illegally. Similar rallies were held the same day in Des Moines, Iowa City, and Davenport.
UU Fellowship of Dubuque attended the Student Involvement Fair at University of Dubuque on Tuesday, August 27. Representing us at our booth was our minister Rev. Samuel Felderman (pictured in the middle), as well as UUFD members Amy Ressler (left) and Jo Ellen Langerman (right). This is a great example of how UUFD shows up for our community.
Unitarian Universalists in Dubuque participated with the Dubuque Area Congregations United on October 22, 2024 to start weaving sleeping mats from plastic grocery bags that have been collected for months. These mats will eventually be donated to unhoused folx. There were about 70 people who spent all or part of the afternoon sorting, cutting, and weaving these mats. There was an evening program following the work session from Advocates for the Homeless - Community Solutions of East Iowa, explaining how the numbers of homeless individuals are counted as well as services.
